Art of Defiance: Protest Graphics and Poetry for Palestine is both an artistic intervention and a historical record of resistance. This groundbreaking 270-page volume, featuring over 50 full-color images, unites protest graphics and poetry to document and amplify the Palestinian struggle for self-determination.
Art of Defiance gathers acclaimed and emerging writers who confront occupation, colonialism, displacement, state violence, and liberation while forging transnational solidarity. Contributors include Refaat Alareer, susan abulhawa, Saul Williams, Huda Skaik, Nour Aldeen Hajjaj, Khaled Mattawa, Hiba Abu Nada, meital yaniv, Yousef Dawas, Basman Aldirawi, Ibrahim Yaghi, Omar Faris Abu Shaweesh, Ahmad Alsouq, Saleem Al-Naffar, DEF Sound, Alexandra Isfahani-Hammond, and others. Several of these poets — Alareer, Abu Nada, Dawas, Abu Shaweesh, Aldeen Hajjaj, and Al-Naffar — were martyred after October 7, 2023, their final words serving as enduring records in a long history of dissent.
Alongside these poets is the work of LOUDER THAN WORDS, an intergenerational, cross-cultural team that wields posters as weapons against Israeli settler colonialism, U.S. imperialism, and the systemic erasure of Palestinians by Western corporate media. Their visually arresting graphics, created in the wake of October 7, 2023, advocate for an end to state violence and occupation, the obstruction of humanitarian aid, arms embargoes, the right of return, and boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS).
Art of Defiance testifies to the enduring power of artistic ingenuity in the face of oppression and stands as a powerful reminder that resistance is, above all, an act of imagination.
Hiba Abu Nada, a novelist, poet, and educator, a beloved figure within the Palestinian literary community and author of the novel Oxygen is Not for the Dead, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza on October 20

I Grant You Refuge, 2023

1.
I grant you refuge
in invocation and prayer.
I bless the neighborhood and the minaret
to guard them
from the rocket
from the moment
it is a general’s command
until it becomes
a raid.
I grant you and the little ones refuge,
the little ones who
change the rocket’s course
before it lands
with their smiles.
2.
I grant you and the little ones refuge,
the little ones now asleep like chicks in a nest.
They don’t walk in their sleep toward dreams.
They know death lurks outside the house.
Their mothers’ tears are now doves
following them, trailing behind
every coffin.
3.
I grant the father refuge,
the little ones’ father who holds the house upright
when it tilts after the bombs.
He implores the moment of death:
“Have mercy. Spare me a little while.
For their sake, I’ve learned to love my life.
Grant them a death
as beautiful as they are.”
4.
I grant you refuge
from hurt and death,
refuge in the glory of our siege,
here in the belly of the whale.
Our streets exalt God with every bomb.
They pray for the mosques and the houses.
And every time the bombing begins in the North,
our supplications rise in the South.
5.
I grant you refuge
from hurt and suffering.
With words of sacred scripture
I shield the oranges from the sting of phosphorous
and the shades of cloud from the smog.
I grant you refuge in knowing
that the dust will clear,
and they who fell in love and died together
will one day laugh

susan abulhawa is a novelist, poet, essayist, scientist, mother, and activist. Her debut novel Mornings in Jenin, considered a classic in Palestinian literature, has been translated into over 30 languages and has sold over a million copies worldwide. Her other novels include The Blue Between Sky and Water and Against the Loveless World, an Aspen Literary Words Prize finalist winner of the Arab American Book Award and the Palestine Book Award, along with the poetry collection, My Voice Sought the Wind. abulhawa is the founder of Playgrounds for Palestine, a children’s organization dedicated to uplifting Palestinian children.

In another life, I would like to be a farmer
or a carpenter,
or both.
In another life, I’d like to be a voracious reader,
consuming art
and sunshine with my coffee.
In another life, I would like to be a neighbor
to elephants and cows and donkeys
and have them over for tea and apples.
In another life, I don’t want things,
except perhaps, a guitar or oud
I could learn to play.
In another life, I’d like to serenade birds
and crocodiles, and spiders too
so, they’d spin their homes in mine
In another life, I’d like to walk on a beach
and collect seashells
to make necklaces for my dogs.
I could do all these things in this life, you say.
Indeed, I could,
but for the cries
of suffering in my ears
that make me long to be an assassin
who eliminates the eliminators of life
and hoarders of resources.
but for the anguish of the wretched
in the air I breathe
that makes me long to free whales
and stingrays and sharks and turtles
from fishermen’s nets.
and train an army of finned
and scaled killers.
but for the tears in a slaughterhouse
and the rivers of blood in Palestine.
but for the violence, upon which
our lives are built.
but for the lies
and fairytales
from which we give consent.
but for it all
that makes me want to burrow underground
and emerge with arms and faith
like the heroes do.
alas, I am too old and too weak
with just a poem to write
and maybe a book or two.
I’ll put my courage and dreams there
on pages with secret words
